Griddle Accessory Review: The Griddle Hood by Yukon Glory

 

 

If you're looking to trick out your outdoor griddle, The Griddle Hood by Yukon Glory is something worth taking a look at.

The outdoor griddle has become tremendously popular recently and more people are cooking on griddles than ever before. Griddles are a convenient, all-in-one cooking station which is much less intimidating to cook over than the open fire of a gas or charcoal grill.

One of the fun things about griddle cooking is that there is almost no learning curve if you've ever cooked indoors.

But cooking outdoors is not without its challenges

When you're cooking in the kitchen, all of your pots, pans, spatulas, and cooking accessories are just a few feet away. Cooking outside on the griddle requires you to bring the griddle accessories with you to the patio to complete the dish. Although this isn't really a big deal, for the most part, outdoor griddle cooks have often been using indoor utensils out on the patio. The griddle accessories, for the most part, have been relatively limited to the basics.

This is why I was so excited to see The Griddle Hood by Yukon Glory.

Yukon Glory has been selling outdoor cooking accessories since 2012 but has really broken trail this season with The Griddle Hood.

The Griddle Hood is a hinged cover that quickly attaches to your 36" griddle. It covers about half of your griddle from front to back and side to side while still leaving room to corral grease and food scraps toward the back of your griddle if you have a rear grease management system.

Sometimes when you are griddle cooking you need to add some convection heat, like when melting cheese, or cooking something like chicken to a safe temperature.

Previously you would use a cloche, cooking dome, or even an inverted stainless steel bowl or brownie pan to trap heat and moisture over your food. This method works fine, but domes and pans are cumbersome. They get hot, and they get in the way.

The Griddle Hood solves these problems.

Hinged design allows The Griddle Hood to cover food when you need it, or give it a quick lift to open it and it's out of the way.

Once open, The Griddle Hood has a warming rack which is extremely convenient and practical. I find the warming rack wonderful for its intended purpose, keeping foods warm, but it works great allowing bacon grease and oils from foods to drip off while you are cooking other foods.

It also has a built-in thermometer which is handy if you are cooking something like a pizza or other baked goods and want to keep the temperature in a certain range.

As more people learn to enjoy outdoor cooking, we will benefit from manufacturers like Yukon Glory providing us with more tools to make the cooking experience convenient and enjoyable.

This year already we've seen a griddle combo with a built-in air fryer that packs innovation into the cooking unit itself. Now with items like The Griddle Hood, we are seeing innovative accessories which is a good thing for all home cooks.
