I haven't done any solar oven cooking so when the opportunity presented itself to try one out I jumped at the chance.

This recipe for solar oven Mexican pizza is simple to make but you will have to be patient for it to work.

What is a solar oven?

A solar oven is basically a box that you put food inside and instead of cooking with gas or electric power, you are harnessing the power of the sun to do the cooking.

Solar ovens come in various shapes and sizes but are most commonly found resembling a tube or looking like a box.

An outdoor solar oven

These ovens trap heat from the sun and reflect it toward your food. It heats the food slowly and steadily but that's not to say it's underpowered.

If you are old enough to remember having compact discs or cassette tapes, chances are you may have had some of them destroyed in your solar oven - otherwise known as the dashboard of your car.

Where would you use a solar oven?

I'd always thought that an outdoor oven like this would be fun to have on a camping trip and a decent activity to pass the time while hanging in the outdoors. Apparently, the people at Busch beer had a similar idea and are hoping to bring some awareness to fire safety in Colorado and other states in the process.

Busch likes the idea so much that they are giving away free solar cookers both online and at select fire departments in Colorado through Labor Day 2022.

What can you cook in a solar oven?

It is an oven, so just about anything that can be baked can be cooked in a solar oven. If you have an efficient oven and a cooking vessel with a tightly fitting lid, the cooking options are seemingly endless. You could easily braise, steam, roast, and even grill inside of the solar-powered device.

What ingredients go into a Mexican pizza?

The thing I like about Mexican pizza is it takes advantage of a tortilla for the pizza crust. After that, you can adorn your pizza with just about anything. Here are a few of my favorite toppings for making a Mexican pizza:

  • Refried beans
  • Black beans
  • Olive rings
  • Diced tomato
  • Pickled Jalapeno slices
  • Monterey Jack Cheese
  • Fresh tomato salsa
  • Avocado or guacamole
  • Sour cream
  • Taco meat
  • Queso fresco
  • Sweet corn

This dish isn't as spicy as our Mexican jalapeno taco boats, but you could make it as spicy as you prefer.
